We support good causes: Czech justice commemorates 70 years since the rigged political trial of Rudolf Slánský
On November 22, 2022, a conference on the trial of Rudolf Slánský and Co. took place, opening up heavy topics about the political trials that took place in the 1940s to 1960s. The conference was organised by the Czech Bar Association, the Museum of the XXth Century, the High Court and the High State Prosecutor’s Office in Prague, conveniently in the historic conference room of the High Court in Prague, in order to commemorate historical mistakes and missteps.
“I believe that today’s event will lead us to reflect more deeply on our professions, on the importance of protecting the essence of the rule of law at this time when we are threatened by a global crisis of democracy and the rule of law. With today’s conference, we want to send a message to the world on behalf of the entire Czech judiciary that we will not allow ourselves to be involved in anything similar in the future,” said JUDr. Robert Němec, LL.M.
“We are meeting at a turbulent time, when what we thought was irreversible since 24 February this year, the beginning of the occupation of Ukraine, is unfortunately no longer the case. We know from history that it is only a step from an authoritarian regime to a totalitarian one, to the suppression of fundamental constitutional freedoms and rights and to the abuse of justice. We can never allow anything like this to happen again,” said JUDr. Jirousek, former President of the CCA, expressing his conviction on behalf of all the distinguished guests whose participation only confirms the importance of this event.
We agree with the principles mentioned above and therefore it was a great honour for us to support an event of this format.
More information about the conference can be found on the website of Advokátní deník.
